I got my first computer in 1988. It was an Apple IIgs. Technically, it was the family computer, since I was only 8 at the time, but I was the main user.

We scrimped and saved and got our first computer in 1985. Apple Macintosh. We were so proud of ourselves!

Discounting the Atari's I owned, 1982. An IBM PC-1. Took me six months to talk my wife into buying it. After all, the cost was about $1000.00 less than the car we bought that same year! Her biggest concern: That I would end up playing games on it. We already had an Atari 2600 and didn't need another game console.

I taught myself how to program, tear the computer apart and add cards and RAM, and learned a lot about how it all worked. I now own my own computer consulting business.

She ended up playing Wizardry.

So much for predictions!

I got mine in the fall of 1988. A cow orker of mine at Northwest Airlines and I were shopping for our first PCs at the same time, and I ended up with a Dell System 220 (20MHz Harris 286 with 1MB of RAM (a DIMM!), 3.5" 1.44MB diskette drive, 40MB hard drive, and VGA on the mommyboard).

Nice box. Ran MS-DOS 3.3 and Windows 2.1 for a while, later upgraded to MS-DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.0, and my monitor was one of those fancy 14" Zenith FTM-1490 "Flat Tension Mask" monitors which had a truly flat screen but ran relatively hot. Those suckers normally retailed for $999, but I got it for a little over $500 via a noname ad in Computer Shopper.

My father bought me one of these:

IBM Convertible 5140 in the mid 80's, I think it was 85, I also had an external 5.25", modem, and carrying case...I sold it to a collector 3 years ago.

I got my first when I moved out of my parents place in 1999 (P3 450Mhz). My parents had a 486 at he time and just upgraded to 95. I wanted something better for myself. Before that we had an Amstrad (monochrome Monitor) and an Amiga 500. Bot had no HDDs.
