what does everyone have for diagnostic repair software! I need my computer to be cleaned up...Of course I have ran all my programs on my computer/ disk fragment/system restore, and the like.
What kind of problem are you trying to fix? There's no magic diagnostic that'll tell you what's wrong with a computer system, much less fix it. I have lots of tools that are useful for different purposes.
ccleaner (crap cleaner) is a good start. It will clean up lots o things. Ive had good luck with it, but reseach it on your own before you decide to use it. Google it for download sites.
I've discovered that after running CCleaner, I hardly see anything come up on either Ad Aware or Spybot S&D, so I quit running both of those. I just keep Spybot up to date and immunized.
Separate your system partition from your data. Create a baseline image of your computer with the OS and its major applications. Then do a weekly/monthly (whatever suits you) image. If your system ever gets out of hand... simply re-image it.
Ghosting take about 20 minutes..... (~16GB), and restoring is a bit less.
What I've been doing for about 15 years - well.. the ghost part came about 5-6 years ago. Before that I would rebuild my system every year or so....
But I've always separated my system files from my data. Much easier to backup and restore. Not to mention upgrade hardware or software. From what I've seen... you fix something here...patch something there... eventually your system starts going bonkers with all the changes you've made. Just easier with Windows to rebuild every so often.
Just out of curiosity, does this ghosting process include all files marked "deleted" and OK for overwrite?
Ghosting pretty much just does a bit by bit copy of your hard drive or partition (depending on how you configure it) and vice versa. Although you can "walk" the image and restore individual files if needed. I believe there are different disk imaging solutions out there... but Symantec Ghost is what I've always used.
It's not "backup" like you would get with tape ....i.e. there is no differential/incremental/full settings. When you create an image, you pretty much select the entire partition or entire drive to image. In the enterprise, they mainly use this to "restore" or build standardized systems.
