I'm running Windows XP and have an HP deskjet D4260 printer. How can I get the "selection" button to work when I try to print? On my old computer and printer, if I highlighted a portion of the text, the "selection" button would automatically be enabled and I could print only what I wanted.
With this set-up, nothing I do will allow me to print a portion of anything--I'm wasting tons of paper and ink!
Help! Please!

ps--I'm a computer idiot--be kind and speak English!!!!!

You didn't tell us what program you are running. However, you can generally select any page or range of pages to print on the General Tab of the Print page.

In Word there is an option on the screen when you click print to only print selection. It's grayed out if you don't have any text selected. Just to the right of All, Current Page, etc, in the Page Range box.

Word 2003 BTW.

I've selected and highlighted the text, but the "selection" button won't work! I'm using either Word, or trying to print from an e-mail. Could that have something to do with it?
When you want to print off of some sort of internet info page (which could take several sheet of paper) and you only want a bit of the info--do I have to cut and paste?

It just seems that no matter what program I'm using, the page range box won't allow the "selection" button to function.

The only reference to this problem I have found relates to installing the full software package that comes with an HP printer. Have you installed the full package? Other than that I'm stumped.

I get a selection radio button in a Word doc, emails, on line pages, etc. when I select text.

I'll double check the installation thing--If I re-install, will it mess up anything? (I didn't do the original set-up of this computer!!!)
Thanks!

It shouldn't, but perhaps the person to ask is the original installer...

Thanks, all! Next time I see them, I'll get their opinion on this "glitch"--otherwise I'll just "cut and paste"==that seems to work ok!

I'm agreeing with Tek_freek. It is possible that the printer was set up with XP automatically choosing the printer drivers instead of using the driver supplied with the printer. That is often a problem, even when Widows recognized the printer correctly. Remove and reinstall driver.
