I'm running a pretty standard...aging even...set up. Windows XP SP3 with Office 2003. I have POP email set up through GMAIL. I have messages in my inbox online. However, Outlook only downloads these emails every so often.

When I click on send/receive, nothing happens...no error message or anything and no messages are downloaded. I've deleted the POP account and set it up again, same thing.

I tried the IMAP thing and that made three IMAP folders for some reason.

Also, I'm using the GMAIL notifier in my task tray so I know if I have any new messages but it always seems to think it can't connect. However when I click on it, it takes me to my GMAIL inbox just fine.

I know the settings for POP work because I've tested them. When I set up the POP account again, a test message did show up in my Gmail inbox. But it should come down into my Outlook and not stay on the Gmail server.

Perhaps all these things are related?

This is all quite confusing and any assistance is much appreciated.

Make sure you have done the following:
  • Type pop.gmail.com under Incoming mail server (POP3):.
  • Type smtp.gmail.com under Outgoing mail server (SMTP):.
  • Make sure My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication is checked.
  • Leave Use same settings as my incoming mail server selected.
  • Go to the Advanced tab.
  • Make sure This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) is checked under both Incoming server (POP3): and Outgoing server (SMTP):.
  • Type 465 under Outgoing server (SMTP):
    • If the number under Incoming server (POP3): has not been changed to 995 automatically, enter 995 there.

I'll check all those things over but I think it's working now. The last time it brought down messages was October 9. I opened it up just now, send/receive kicked into gear and it is downloading hundreds of messages. I know this is doing this because I marked the box to download all the messages since xx date but the weird thing is it's like the computer forgot it had downloaded almost all of these before.

All the same, if it begins to work normal after this...I'll be happy.
