If you want to pay, I suggest Windows Live OneCare, 3 PCs are covered and the settings can be managed from any one of them.

Other than that, Norton should have an uninstall tool.
Do you turn off the Avast firewall?

Thank you for all your replies !!! I have been doing a lot of research on your suggestions and so far have decided on AVG and CCleaner (which I used prior to my switchover).

Unfortunately with dial up , AVG needs 6+ hrs to load and my pc timed out on me prior to it finishing , so I've been unable to check it out its' capabilities (yet).

I'm also trying to find info on how to set up CCleaner so that it doesn't just get rid of things before letting me review them . I had to learn this lesson the hard way my first time using it on the new pc . I remember something about this when I set it up on my old computer, but don't recall where I got the great advice .

Once I work out some kinks, I may be back for more help !

Thanks again !!!

Do you know someone with a cable connection? If so, get a thumb drive and download what you need on their computer, then bring the thumb drive home, plug it in and away you go.

HDL - I know the woes with dialup's slowness - up until last year that was my mode of connection. When I first tried to download AVG, it took quite a few sessions before success since there were a number of timeouts and hiccups. I agree with Roselvr's suggestion to somehow download it from somewhere else onto a flash drive and then use that to install AVG onto your machine. Although it means going an extra mile to do it, that mile is well-worth it.

Also taking the tower and hooking it at a friends house works. A bit more of a PITA but you'd be able to do everything you needed in one shot.
