Never buy the bottom of the line from any builder. You get what you pay for.
If you are comfortable doing it open any new PC you buy and look at the power supply brand. Sometimes it's on the back so you don't have to look inside, but not very often. If the power supply is a Bestec (sp?) get rid of it. eMachines were (are?) known for having the Bestec power supply blow and taking the motherboard with it...
Something to keep in mind is that there are a limited number of computer parts makers in the world. Whatever brand you buy you will see the same parts over and over. It's more about the quality of the building process sometimes...
I've had good luck with Lenovo, Dell, Compaq, HP, Sony, and Toshiba.
I installed an Alienware once. Wouldn't do it again.
Knowing yor price range and what you will use it for would help greatly.
Okay, I'm getting quite a chuckle and I'll bet John is, too,
Anyone else finally notice the date of original post?
WOW. usually I check but this morning I didn't.
I HATE the links at the bottom of every post. Thankfully I wasn't the one that bumped the post up to begin with lol
Looks like the bump was spam anyway. I reported it
I would stay away from Dell now. It seems like they really declined in quality the last couple of years. Everyone I know that has bought from them the last couple of years have had nothng but problems with their machines including hard drive crashes.
I have heard nothing but good things about Newegg.com and Tigerdirect.com (atleast until this thread) but have never used them personally.
I would also stay away from HP. Their products are pieces of **** and they charge outrages prices for replacement parts. For example, a power cord for an external CD burner I have goes for about $86 although the burner itself is only worth about $60. Any company that charges $86 for a power cord is not getting my business.

Dell?
I see them everywhere in the office, including most machines that other folks have brought in.
I am using an Inspiron 9400/E1705 Laptop bought refurbed from Dell Outlet, pushing 5,000 C-D posts with no hassle and several thousand photos uploaded to Flickr.
It has been used hard, is on its second keyboard with the letters wearing off it, paint worn off where I put my left hand beside the touchpad for hours a day.
The hard drive went in July, at about the two year anniversary, and I got a free one to replace it.
I very much like this machine, and the service through Dell has been acceptable to very good. I would buy another refurb via Dell Outlet in a heartbeat, with absolutely no hesitation.

Yeah, I just checked too. Oh well. At least we got a good sticky thread out of it.
I found some really good prices at buyextras.com a couple of years ago. I had to return something that did now work for me and had a good experience with that too.
