It honestly sounds like you're modem is dead.. I mean if you have drivers for video card, sound etc. (meaning your sound is working) then the restore cd/dvd should have done your modem too.. if it's not in Device Manager and there's no yellow dot.. it sounds like it's dead (there haven't been modems that didn't show up since the very old 95 days)

Maybe what you should do is open the case and put the modem in another available PCI slot (modem card is easy to recognize, it has phone jacks in it) if that doesn't produce a new hardware found.. yellow dot in vista/xp then I think you need to buy a new modem.. or have emachines replace it whichever you prefer...

OK the restore CD didn't work. A friend sent me a fresh version of XP & I pressed F10 & booted from CD... I'm betting this doesn't work, either. I really, really wouldn't get an Emachine again.

Windows can tell if there is hardware plugged in, it just can't tell what to do with it. That is all drivers do: they tell windows how to use the hardware.

Yes. Those machines use winmodems, so you have to install the software, chances are very good that XP won't automatically detect it.

I spent about 2-3 hrs w/ at least 4 people from India who could NOT understand the situation, couldm't understand ME,or simply babbled on about stuff the OTHER techs already had me do,asked me,etc.

When I put the restore CD in & restart, nothing happens. If anyone knows a solution to my problem,or can point me in the right direction,it would be appriciated!!
Take a deep breath and try to start again.
You need to answer some questions:
1) Is this a desktop or a laptop?
2) What is the model number?
3) You mention XP and you mention Vista - what did it come with - Windows XP or Vista?

From what I'm reading, it sounds like XP is installed but you don't have modem drivers - are you on dialup?

Next, if the computer/laptop came with Vista installed, there may not be Windows XP drivers for it, this is why we need to know what it came with.

We can't really help you unless you answer some questions...

My original computer was an emachine I got in '98, and the only problems I ever had with it were definitely not the fault of the computer [or me either, for that matter]. But it's been rebuilt so many times that all that's left of it is the case and a 100 mg zip drive I immediately installed on it. I know, they are outmoded now, but I have a lot of files on zip disks I don't want to lose. And it's gone from a P II to a P III. I also had the original hard drive copied and it's still there as a data storage drive. So I have 2 hard drives with a total of 40 gb of room, a R/W CD, lots of USB stuff, ad nauseum. But I also have no idea how emachines have changed in the past decade. If I were to replace it entirely, I'd probably get an Acer or Compaq. Those were my second choices - but never an HP, Gateway, or Dell, too many horror stories from friends and family and techs I've known. I could probably upgrade from a P III, but since I don't need the speed, there's no point. What I have works fine, when there's a problem, it's generally me, not the computer.

I like zip drives too.
I did upgrade to a 750, it reads the 100.
I have to say that for long term storage, zips have been reliable for me

While they are the "same" they are different.
I've used tech support on both sides and have found compaq to be better then HP.
