My HP laptop, running XP seems to be stuck in the middle of installing hardware. When I click on "Add Hardware" I get a message that says "You can install one device at a time. Another device installation is underway" I am not installing anything else. I have rebooted, shut down for 12 hrs, ran Norton scans for junk, restored to earlier date and spent 45 min with new device tech line. Nothing works. Can anyone help?
Well, I'd tell you to remove norton but it's likely not the cause of the problem..
Open up Device Manager.. Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager (some what similar on vista) look for yellow exclamation points or red X's.. and type out there names here so we can take a guess at what hardware isn't installed
First of all, what you to trying to do? Are you clicking the Add Hardware button in Control Panel? Why? I haven't used that applet since the early days of Win95 when there was lots of non-PnP hardware out there. If you're trying to install a new device, you should follow the manufacturer's instructions which usually means installing the software and then plugging the device in when prompted.
When it would not P&P I went to Add Hardware to see if I could add it manually. That's when the message came up. I cleared the above but missed one the first look thru devices. I am now getting a ! on Linksys network root hub and another one on unknown device. Both of these are under other devices
To answer your first question I'm replacing a wireless mouse. Actually mfg instructions said if it didn't P&P go to add hardware.
Also, make sure the Plug N Play service is up and running. Go start, run, services.msc <enter> and look for it in the list. If its not running, try starting it, and if it fails, check the logs.
