I have a Toshiba Satellite. Since Tuesday, my wireless Internet has not been working well, even though it says it has an excellent connection. I've tried restarting the router and doing the troubleshooting on my laptop. The other laptops in my house are having no issues so it is just my computer. I've run Norton's to make sure there are no viruses. I don't know what else to try. Does anybody know what might be going on?

How long have you had this machine? Is the Norton UP to DATE? Have you tried connecting that machine to the router with CAT5 to see if you have any problems?

From my many experiences troubleshooting, the scenario you describe using resolves with removing or updating Norton.

The machine is probably a little over 2-years-old. As far as I know, Norton's is up-to-date. It's due for renewal in 30 days but I've installed all the updates and run a scan every week. Earlier this week my laptop would work fine if it was closer to the router, which is why I thought maybe it just wasn't getting a good signal, but now it won't work at all. I'll try connecting it to the router.

Are you using encryption? If so you might try resetting the key.

Software firewall? If it's Norton has it updated lately? Check the network allowances. I usually try to add a range of addresses allowed so I don't have to worry about it, but sometimes the settings can be changed by updates.

I usually use 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.254

Plugging in a cat5 was a good suggestion.

You don't accidentally have the wireless turned off? Most laptops have a switch somewhere and I quite often find that clients have pushed it and all it takes is turning it back on...

Go into Control Panel/System/Hardware tab/Device Manager and check the wireless card, Any !'s or ?'s?

What software is set to manage the wireless? It came with software from Toshiba I'm sure, but I usually switch mine to use Microsoft. It just seems to be more reliable.

Are you using the 3rd party wireless utility or the windows?

Have you tried pinging your router with -t command leaving the window open and seeing when it goes down?

Do you have a 2.4 ghz phone or other nearby obstacle like microwave in the location your using it.. have you seen if the connection is aka better with the other laptops location?

OK, no fair laughing.

Have you changed the direction of the antenna on the wireless router? Ran into this before and was flabbergasted. I didn't think a change of 45 degrees would make much of a difference, but it did.

A follow up to themaster... Any new phones added? Changes in the layout of furniture or electronics?

Checking strength in the same location as the other wireless is an excellent suggestion.

On occasion I have found that even though my machine tells me I'm connected with excellent strength and speed, I'm really not. I find that so annoying.

First thing first, if your Norton is expiring soon, let it expire and dump it off your laptop. Honestly and truly there are better antivirus programs.

Second, as themaster suggested, try pinging.

Third, as Tek_Freek and themaster asked, any new electronics in the vicinity? and yes, try turning the antenna in a different direction - crazy, but that can make a big difference (know that from experience!)
