You don't have to go through itunes if you know where the files are on your computer. From what I know, itunes/ipod will play files in mp3, mp4 and aac format. Here's a link that shows you how to change the itunes settings to convert files to mp3: Convert iTunes to MP3 Format

If this still doesn't work it may be that your music files are copy-protected. The only workaround I know for this is to burn them to a music CD, then import them from the CD into itunes in the mp3 format. Here's another source for converting from AAC to mp3: How to convert AAC to MP3 | MP3 Insider - CNET Reviews

i know itunes works on my dw's mp3/mp4 player and hers is a different one then mine. i'll give the converter download a try.

Are you sharing the same computer or is this also 2 computers?
If it's two, I was wondering what happens when you plug your Coby into her computer then try itunes that way, are you able to transfer songs onto yours?

I also wonder if the songs are copy protected and won't play due to that. If you are using 2 computers, I also wonder what is different about the way you both saved music on each computer

Ok, question, do you have 2 user accounts set up on the computer? If you have one user account, perhaps try making another user account for you, then import her music into media player on your side.
