I'd try Open Office first before paying for Works. It's not as good as Office, but it's far better than Works, and it's free. And since the OP has Office 2003 he's better off than with a new version of Works, anyway.

Some people don't like Open Office, me being one of them.
I use Office & Works a lot, last time I tried Open Office it wouldn't open my Microsoft files correctly. To me, spending $40 on Works beats even something free. It's an option if he really wanted the new version of Word without spending tons of cash.

Works is not Word. He already has Office 2003. I use Open Office just about every day and while there are some disadvantages compared to Word, it's miles ahead of Works. I've never had a problem opening any word or wordperfect file with it, but some of the commands are different, and some of the more advanced features aren't there - but they're not in Works either.

Some versions of Works come (or used to) with Word. That was why I suggested he go to Walmart and read the boxes.
If he qualifies he can also buy a student copy of Office.
Okay, so I am going to preface this as probably a dumb question, but I'm not sure if my suspicions are correct and need a smarter person.
I erased my hard drive and reinstalled my 2005 XP disks. Before I erased my HD, I got a notice saying the current XP was newer than the disks (did I upgrade and completely forget?). This past year I got XP Office Pro, and operated as the new, snazzy-looking version. Well, I reinstalled it today, and opens as the "old"-looking Word.
My suspicion is that I upgraded XP along the way (which I don't have the disks for) which allowed Office Pro to run as the snazzy version. I'm thinking that since I have the 2005 XP, my Office Pro can only run as the "old" version.
Am I correct? Or did I do something wrong? Thanks so much.
Thats the one thing that confuses many if it was media center 2005 then service pack 2 shipped with it, and you installed service pack 3, as for software that has been upgraded and updated, youw ill need to find disks for those, and update them accordingly.

I don't believe Works has come with Word since 2002 or so, and that version, Word 2002, is older than what the OP has. Today, a standalone upgrade to Word 2007 (which requires you already have Word 2003 installed) costs 90 bucks at Amazon, which is more than the entire Works suite. Works has the capability of opening many word documents, but someone who already has Word 2003 isn't going to see any improvements by switching to Works.
Anyway, he's going to borrow his friend's Office 2007 disks, so this whole sidebar is kind of irrelevant.

No longer requires a qualification. MS gave that up. I just got the Student version for $99 at a local big box. Comes with three licenses.
