When I tried to rip a CD onto my computer through windows media player, I get this error message "A drive is needed in order to rip music from CDs."
It just happened all of a sudden and I don't know why, I just had this cd player replaced by a Dell technician not to long ago. Does the error mean the cd player is corrupt and need to be replaced or is there some type of troubleshooting I can to so that my computer reads the cd drive? Thanks
If it's a desktop computer, unplug it, open up the case and make sure all of the cables going into the DVD drive are plugged in securely.
If it's still not working after that, you can get a troubleshooting walkthru from the Windows "Help and Support Center." Start Menu > Help & Support > Hardware.

Before you go to opening it, especially if you don't have a clue what is inside a computer or what to look for, or even how to open it, I would suggest you open Windows Explorer, and see if a CD/DVD drive shows when you open the my computer in the left column. If it is there, put in a CD or DVD and see if it is recognized.
It may be as simple as the software you are trying to use to RIP isn't configured correctly.
Be careful when opening a case, make sure all power cords are disconnected including those going to peripheral devices like a monitor, printer etc.
Be sure to touch a metal part of the case before touching anything else inside the computer, this will discharge any static electricity. That little shock can ruin your computer...
You can right click your hard drive, then click properties -> Hardware -> click on the drive you have a concern about. Make sure your hardware drivers are updated.
I'm scared to open my computer, I will get someone to do it for me. I will try the other tips posted to see if it works. If not, I will have someone take a look at it for me. Thanks for the responses.
