Avast lets me know anytime there is an attack. Usually it will suggests disconnecting from the site or else putting the bad critter in a quarantine. It's both AV and firewall. More recently, I've added ThreatFire. I haven't fully tested that program, yet, but so far, my impression is that it may be stopping any bad stuff before Avast notices it. One thing you have to so with ThreatFire is to suspend it before doing anything with the registry.

but dont forget its the hardware and software makers that will abandon it once enough people get off of it so it could very well be in 2012 before support dwindles to a hualt

Sounds simple, but it may not be.

people need to take in account, that many new pc's especially HP do not provde drivers via the HP website, when that happens the average user will not go around and search for drivers, and when they do thats when they end up putting bogus bull on their pc because they dowload anything

Some hardware in new PC's simply does not have drivers available for anything but Vista. You don't "upgrade" to XP with those.

I had quite an argument with a tech over it and washed my hands of the project. Told the client involved that when the whole thing blew up in his face I did not expect my phone to ring.

It rang.

It cost him a lot of money for me to fix the mess the idiot tech left behind.

I'm no tech wizard, but I'd buy a new computer with XP on it if I couldn't wait for Windows 7. I'd expect trouble converting a Vista box to XP.
