You might check out MajorGeeks list of recovery stuff. Here's one example that might work, aside from over-written stuff. It is shareware which means you can try it out without buying it.

Look at all the programs that look promising and do your due diligence.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I was starting to get blue screens again, but that stopped since I got rid of AVG and Firefox. I now use McAfee (free w/comcast) and IE and haven't gotten 1 blue screen since. That is why I decided with an external HD.
