My dell laptop goes from off to useable in just over 30 seconds? I just keep it organized and not full of garbage, and optimized the boot sequence.

Have you ran the hard drive cleanup tool and defragged lately? How new is "new"?

Start by checking your startup tab on msconfig. You might also have programs trying to check for updates or make network connections, that can interupt the desktop loading. Also make sure you don't have any unnecessary printers installed. I'm also not sold on Malbytes. I've come across a few users who've experienced problems after installing it.

When my computer was new there were a ton of programs all trying to update themselves during bootup so that it took forever. It took a lot of manual tweaking to stop all that. As Arcane suggests, check and see what's happening exactly at startup and tweak accordingly.

My father's machine takes forever (frustrating to me!) and it's because so many of his programs are fighting each other for updating priority and such.
