I got suckered into a job and I really need to bide my time until I find something else. They told me I wouldn't need to know programming and I would be trained, but no training has happened and now they want me to make up a program. Ugh.

From what I understand, IDL is comparable to C++ and is from the ITT company. I haven't worked with it long enough to make up a program that will convert these files so that the image program, ENVI, can read them.

I need to write a simple program in IDL to parse the header and read these weird .arf extension files into IDL. The .arf extensions are all panchromatic moving images called 'stacks' because it's like a stack of papers on top of eachother that when flipped through, the images on them appear to move, like a drawn cartoon animation may do if flipping through a stack of index cards.

I know it's easy, but it's not easy to someone that never touches the stuff. I've only gotten this far and I don't even know if it's correct:

OPENR, lun, 'filename.arf',/GET_LUN ; read file into IDL

It should just be a matter of syntax, but I've never written a program and guess what---my manager won't give me the code to help me.
