Exactly right. If it was a VIRUS, I too would routinely scan the hard disk before leaving the machine. To clear up another point, when I have cleaned it off, a trace seems to still exist, but restarting the PC removed the last trace of the program. This program has been around for a while, at least since early 2008. I've seen at least 3 variations of it and gotten all of them cleaned off without too much trouble.

Ohhh, now I get it Create a problem, and have people pay you for the solution to the problem you created...some very strange logic, indeed.

BINGO! And people fall for it, I've had 2 lawyer clients shell out $80 for it, then call me after the fact to tell me they're having a problem.
Only thing is the application doesn't get any better after you pay for it. Some versions actually have an uninstaller but won't uninstall unless you pay for it.

OMG...computer terrorists, holding your computer for ransom. Is there an area of law that goes after this sort of illegal action...follow the money to source, then sue them?

As far as the problem in the US, the source is usually a foreign country, to which our laws don't apply, so unless your in the same country as the scammer, your SOL. Also there are some malware that will actually detect what language or country the PC it's trying to infect is located in, and if it's the same country the scammers are from, it won't install.

Interesting...seems like international trade laws or some such thing would cover this sort of crime.

You should start your own thread on your issue rather than adding to a 3 month old one.

If you can't get online to download a malware scanner there's not much we can do. Do you have another PC and a thumb drive to download and move files?

Yep, mostly Russians. And a lot of them are kids.

Oh and BTW, I've read you can rename the installer and it will install. But you have to get the program on the puter, first...
