Would it be possible to network my computers together with my router without having to be connected to the internet? Where I live I cannot get cable nor DSL so the only wireless connection I have is a USB wireless modem. I would like to be able to stream material from my laptop to my PS3, but I was hoping that I would be able to do this without having to have an internet connection to do so.
Yes you can buy a router and setup without an internet connection. I would actually suggest getting a gateway router anyway since it will work the same and will let you add internet if it ever becomes available.
What Bowie said is correct, though I don't know if you could use a crossover cable with the PS3, don't own one to test it lols. But you should be able to.
My suggestion would be to buy a router, they're what like $40 now? Then just setup a small computer to store movies, files, etc and then connect the laptop via wireless or wired, PS3 via wired and you've got access to everything on that computer (server) from both computers. That's how I've got my network now.
Internet > Cable Modem > Server > Wired PCs > Wireless Access Point > Wifi PCs
The server I've got has dual lan ports, one goes to the cable modem/internet and the other to the switch that feeds everything else and allows internet access on down the line. I'm sure there's a better way to do it, but this is how mines setup.
