Ok, I am going to step out of this conversation as apparently no one is reading what I'm saying.

NEVER did I say that the person should use the companies computer.
NEVER did I say that the IT Dept should set up the Laptop for him.

This isn't about morals. This isn't about the company policy. This isn't about any of that. The guy wants to know how to do it. It is up to HIM to make the choice to do it or not.

So. OP, if you want to hook up YOUR laptop to their FREE OPEN WIFI, go buy a USB Wireless adapter and have at it.

Aside from ethics and danger to corporate resources by possibly downloading a virus, if you unplug your ethernet from the company network you won't be able to send or receive company email. You'll be "off the grid."
