I have a relatively new Toshiba laptop (few months old) and need to get a good virus protection. It came with a 3 month supply of Norton, but didn't renew, as not fond of the Norton system. I heard AVG was good and can be downloaded for FREE but have no idea on if that is the case or even how to go about it. I am not computer savvy, as far as being a techy goes, so leary of my skills to attempt something like that and also if downloading from and unfamiliar site would cause more harm than good.

I have checked in my local community like PC Doc, PC Gold etc., as well as, private computer ads, but they are pretty expensive and with the busier businesses, like PC Gold and Best Buy, the average wait to get it done is 7 to ten days.

Any suggestions on good virus protections, FREE or not that I can get?

Thanks.

Yes AVG is free and easy to use.

You can go to free.grisoft.com and follow the links to Basic Protection and ignore all the attempts to upsell you.

Here is a link that should get you close to the download point:

AVG Free - Download installation files & documentation

Look for text near the bottom of that page that says:

AVG Free 9.0 for Windows (http://download.avgfree.com/filedir/inst/avg_free_stb_en_9_40_free.exe - broken link)
AVG Download Manager (English)

Click it. Let it download. Install it. Step through the very simple wizard. Make sure to set it up to automatically scan and download updates. Then just leave your computer on during that scheduled time so it can run.

It will generally not bother you after you set it up.

Also get Malwarebytes, or Spybot Search and Destroy to get rid of nasty things that are not virii.

I prefer AVAST over AVG because it installs cleaner.

I have been using Microsoft One Care on five computers in my house with very good success for two years.

Because One Care does not work on Windows 7 I replaced it on my Win 7 system with Microsoft Live Essentials (free) and am very happy with it so far.

I really see no reason to buy a Symantec, McAfee, or similar $$$ product.

Windows live essentials seems to get good reviews, I've moved away from recommending AVG, Avast is good as well. For on demand malware scanning I'll second Malwarebytes, and also suggest SuperAntiSpyware.

I'd used AVG for a number of years and had few problems with it, but when I switched to Windows 7 a few months back I decided to give the then-beta Microsoft Security Essentials a try, and have continued using it. It runs "quietly" (no nags, notices, etc.) and I've had no issues with it.

It's almost too "quiet" as everything is done automatically. Even when you mouse over the icon on the task bar the only option it gives you is open. You can't even stop it if you wanted, unless you go to task manager and stop the process or uninstall it.
