I have a Compaq 2100 that is about 5 years old. I now want to use it in my company truck so I can remote into my desktop and Quickbooks at home. I also use it for email and some web site like mapsco, google and basic search. What is one of the Anti Virus to install on this old machine. I may buy some more ram or memory (whatever the correct term is to help the machine) I do not do any gaming on it. I want some that is easy on the resoucres but will keep up and get the job done.
How much memory does it have now? I'm assuming its running Windows XP. If you have less than 512MB, upgrade it. 512MB is passable if you don't do that much with it and don't want to put any money into it. 1GB+ is ideal. I use and recommend AVG Free 8.5 available at AVG Free - Download antivirus and antispyware software for Windows XP and Vista. How are you planning on accessing the Internet from your truck?
I think is has 512, I had AVG and even paid for the real deal and it seem to slow it down. I bought a deal from verizon and use it like that.
While I have been a fan of AVG, I also have clients that have been complaining that email is extremely slow when AVG scans it for spam. Slow to the point of getting rid of AVG.

Which one did you pay for? AVG's Internet Security Suite is a resource hog. That's why I like the free one. There's a pay version that's JUST the antivirus/antispyware with no firewall or other crap that's good too.

AVG was very good at first. But I did notice what your clients are saying. Not sure if they changed something or what but it got on my nerve, So I did what they wanted and got rid of it.

I had the sutie. That is why I m trying to stay away from AVG at this time. I don't mind paying but want somethng that will not hog the resource and work good for this machine.
Norton NIS 2009. As I've mentioned on other threads I am impressed. Don't buy an older version though they are not the same as 2009.
I have NIS 2009, I just brought two new desktop and one new laptop and used NIS for the three of them. Plus I thought I read that you have to have some really good ram and strong system for NIS 2009 to work, I may be wrong, I m not an expert in this by any means.
