I heard this and it is called the "Conficker" virus. The "hubs" is a systems engineer and his company already got notice....very true so be careful.

Everyone should make sure security updates are current today and that their virus software is up to date.

Default Its 12AM the world isn't over Conficker thread

Well its 12 AM, no dramatic bandwidth increases on my computer or network, no weird messages or mouse moving on it's own. Guess i didn't browse any weird websites this time.

Next panic is y2k10.

The media made it sound like everyone's hard drive was going to melt down into a pile of dog poo.

It was over sensationalized by the media but the threat is still there. All the white hats know is the virus is scheduled to report in today. What it will be told to do though nobody knows.

That's what the media does, it's more important to sensationalize and get ratings than it is to report the truth.

The sound computing practices we recommend on here (up to date virus protection and Windows patches, plus common sense surfing) are all that is required to prevent this and most other trouble. In addition, CNN reported this morning that most (~1/2) of the Conficker problems are in Asia. I'll continue to try to give good, practical advice, regardless of what panic is being generated by the media.
