I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop. I had a virus that I couldn't get rid of so I completely reformatedit. I used all the disk that came with it and everything works except....my sound. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall everthing. I've updated and downloaded. I've had a bit of experience with computer but I'm no expert by no means. I've never had a problem getting the sound back. I even tried the Dell web site. I don't know what else to do. Can someone PLEASE help!?!?

Vista or XP? Go into Device Manager and see if there's anything there with a yellow "?" or an unknown device.

That's probably your sound card, did you use your service tag to download the correct driver from Dell? Go here and select the Choose by service tag option and enter the service tag from the sticker on the bottom of the case.

I don't think I have a service tag This thing was given to me by a friend because she had soooo many problems with it. I just put vista on here to see if that ould fix it and now I have a speaker symbol in my icon tray but no sound. I have tried to download everything I can find. The sound worked before I reformated it so I now it's not the soundcard. It's a Sigmatel 9200. I have read where other people have had this problem but not how it was fixed. I know I've gotta be doing something wrong but I have no clue what.

Scratch all that if you've read it:

Try that one.

I would also go back to XP, but that is just me. Vista is reported to run on E1505 just fine.

It says device object not found restart and run setup again. I tried that and it keeps saying the thing. I'm not too much on Vista either. If I don't soon get sound I'll go back to XP. I also looked in device manager and have a yellow mark on high definition audio controller. I can't seem to fix it.

You may want to try installing this sound driver: http://ftp.us.dell.com/audio/R171788.exe.

I tried that one too. I think I figured out what I have done wrong. I found this one page that says I may need to install devices in a certain order. Something I was unaware of I'm not sure if I need to feel like an a$$ or not. I've reformated hundreds of pcs for people and never had this problem. Of course....this would be the first Dell I've ever run into. Ok...I'm gonna try this when I get home. I'm at work so I gotta wait

Try going to JoeCartoon.com some times its something simple like a plug in & for some reason, going there and clicking on some of the cartoons will add the plug in needed.

It could also be that Vista isn't supported with that integrated sound.

You also might need to install a driver package.
I'd imagine this is an intel based system?
I've done it with AMD/nVidia systems where you had to go to nVidia & get the package.

Don't know if you did this -
Technical Support for Inspiron 6400/E1505 -Troubleshooting Audio Issues- this is a sound help file.
