I have a desktop computer about a year old that my son now uses for games. It has just the standard video card, and I need to upgrade so my son can play the newer games. Problem is, I dont want to spend a lot of money. I have seen a 1 gb Nvidia Gforce 9500gt on Ebay for under $80 brand new
Will this be good enough? Any other ideas?

I'm not Mr. Wizard when it comes to graphics cards and the newer games, but I would expect that card to do well.

Considering the price you are seeing on eBay you should check these. Make sure your computer has the right slot for these cards (PCI Express). Considering it's age it should, but be sure before buying.

that card should be just fine. I have the 9600GT and its worked perfectly on everything so far.

the slot type will have an effect on speed also. Don' buy anything that goes into a standard PCI slot. It gets bottlenecked there and a nice video card in a PCI slot is worthless.

AGP cards can be fast.

PCI-e is the best slot to have.

Also double check what resource your game uses the most of. Some need more video processing, while others need more RAM or CPU power.

It could very well be a PCI-E 2.0 card as well, in which the motherboard would have to be compatible with.

Best thing to do is look at the system requirements for the games he's gonna play and get something a bit better.

You should post the brand & model number of the computer, someone can look it up to see what kind of video card you need
