Can I guess that someone sent it to you? If so, perhaps by chance you were sent the associated text file to the video rather than the video itself. I've done "duh" things such as sending a thumbnail file from my digital camera instead of the jpg photo.

it was on a disc, so they saved it to the disc wrong maybe you think?

How large is the file? If it's large, it's possible that only the file extension was changed and it might work when you just change it to ".avi" or ".mpg".

Rudbeckia, you may be right. Can you ask the sender what the video's file name is on his/her computer? I'll bet it has .ave or .mpg or something.

I know that a disk burning program I have, Roxio I think, asks what kind of data is to be burned - photos, music, or text kinds of data. Perhaps the sender of your video has a similar program and wasn't sure what to choose or inadvertently chose the wrong format.

Files with numbers are usually one part of a split archive. e.g some_name.001, some_name.002.... some_name.601, some_name.602..... They are commonly used in newsgroups because news servers will drop large posts with binary data so they have to be split. Once you have all or in some cases some of the parts you can reassemble it with software made to put them back together. Partial files will only work with some archives and you need at a bare minimum the first one unless they have .par files to go along with them.
