Before I didn't need an antivirus because I didn't do risky stuff like torrents or looking at porn sites. Now I do heavy torrenting and ESET NOD32 catches the bad stuff. Plus Spyware Doctor catches a lot of web spyware from lotsa web browsing, it also cured my recent nasty Trojan infection that killed Windows Updating for me. Then I got Malewarebytes too. These 3 programs protect me from all the nasty stuff you can get from web browsing and torrents.

How about you just don't download nasty stuff in the first place? No anti-malware product (including Nod32) catches everything. I've seen computers supposedly protected by every anti-malware package out there get infected.

get a netbook or a used laptop as a pc for secure transactions. restrict its use to only conducting transactions on online banking, shopping, and other e-commerce. if you need to do any browsing of these sites, do it anonymously on your main pc without exposing your customer information (i.e., don't login). it goes without saying, but you still need to activate a firewall and an antivirus on this second pc.

1. Run behind a hardware firewall/router
2. I use Microsoft Security Essentials on 5 computers (free)
3. I use the Win7 built in firewall.
4. I use Spybot and occasionally Malwarebytes

With three teenagers in the house I haven't had a serious infection by anything in years. And no messed up registries like I used to get with Norton/Symantec.
