Looking for an external laptop battery for my Compaq Presario. It's about three years old, and doesn't have a CPU designed specifically for laptops, and so the battery life has always been approximately two hours. I'm going to be using it more frequently for work, and so I'd like to get an external battery to extend the battery life for those situations where there's no outlet nearby.

I know that battery life varies tremendously, but on average, how much extra time should I expect to get out of it?

Battery packs are rated in mAh (milliamp-hours) or Wh (watt-hours, if they have variable output voltages). Compare the mAh or Wh on the battery you plan to get with that of your existing battery. The ratio of the two will tell you how many times longer you can expect the external battery to last.

BTW, most stock laptop batteries are rated in mAh; to convert to Wh, simply multiply by the output voltage of the battery (this is usually either 12V or 19V) and divide by 1000.
