Default Good free anti-virus software

I just received notification that there will no longer be updates available for AVG 7.5. Now it wants me to upgrade to AVG 8.5...and pay $44.99. Does anyone know of anything available for a free download that will do more or less the same thing?

I don't think this is anything new. Hasn't AVG always offered their basic virus protection for free, and their "upgraded" virus protection, with anti-spam, phishing, identity theft protection, etc., for a fee? I see no indication on their website that they are going to stop providing virus updates for the free version.

I run the free version of AVG and am at version 8.0.

What they are saying is 7.5 is being discontinued and will no longer be supported, do what others have said and download the new free version.
