I was facing same problem as u have mentioned that at certain agles lcd works and most of the angles its displaying lines etc.

Solution:
When u open ur lcd. You will find LCD wires which are too much pressed or loosened. So either tight them of loose them. And problem is solved.

It did it again but will not work even after restarted. I found that it works fine if you open it about a 1/4 way, then any farther the lines start coming back and it goes all crazy again until I close it 1/4 way, then its fine. Of course its impossible to use it like that, so I am wondering if anyone knows whats going on and can it be fixed?

Google "HP -MODEL NUMBER- DISASSEMBLE". Some nerd out there has documented how to take it apart. Every time I need to take one apart there is always a tutorial out there explaining it. Some even have videos on how to do it.
I would try that first. Reseat the cable.
