I will have around 1,000 for a new computer. I am either looking at a Dell XPS (Hooking it up to my 32" LCD) and a Dell Mini, or a dell studio laptop..
What do you think would be the best combination??
I could build a computer to save some money, but I dont know how that would work without having a warranty.

What, you don't offer yourself a warranty? Maybe yourself should have someone else build a computer.
BTW: Doesn't Dell XPS computers start at $800, plus tax? That wouldn't allow much money left over to buy a mini (netbook).
For me, I usually buy my PCs and laptops and most everything else from Dell's refurbished outlet. I just like having all the tech support and easy access to drivers and updates. Doesn't cost that much more and I like the refurbished interface with the drop down boxes to filter on memory amount, hard drive size, etc.
My first question is what do you use your computer for? Unless you do CAD, video editing, or gaming you don't really need a thousand dollar computer. Contrary to popular belief, building your own computer, to comparable specs of a Dell your looking at, likely won't save you any money, unless you use really cheap components, which is a bad idea. When you build your own each part is warranted by the mfg.
Try the HP6735S. I also like Tiger Direct but also check prices against Amazon. Just checked Amazon and it is $499 this morning.
