Default CD Rom Problem

My CD rom won't burn any CD's. I try to burn music fom itunes and the CD just ejects itself. I also can't install any software with the CD driver. When I put in a disk nothing happens. I've tried unistalling the drive and it reinstalled ok. I clicked eject in my-computer and it ejected so I know the computer is detecting the CD drive. Device manager isn't showing any problem. What else could be the problem? I've tried using a CD cleaner but I'am not sure if it's actually cleaning. Any ideas on possible problem? I have a Compaq Pressario desktop,CD-RW drive,Windows XP.

Drives fail, and it sounds like yours has.

You can replace it for very little money these days. You just need to make sure to get one that uses the same interface (EIDE or SATA). The best route will be to replace it with a DVD-RW DL drive and you can handle any burning except Blu-Ray.

Burning software? ImgBurn a free program that handles all my burning needs.

Did I mention it is free

Device manager is not a hardware diagnostic tool, it cannot tell you whether a piece of hardware is good or bad, it tells you whether or not the drivers for a piece of hardware are installed and working. Short of a bad data cable, as Asheville said, the drive is likely bad.

I'am not too familiar with DVD drives but is their a particular reason you recommend a DVD-RW DL? Is it more versitle?
