To give an update on the original problem, it was fixed - and it turned out to be so so simple. The wrong key was entered in the settings. It wasn't until the working laptop was set next to the nonworking one and a comparison was done to see there were more "dots" representing the key/password on one machine and not the other. Simply, reentering the key did the trick.
The mountain I saw was really just a mole hill after all.
