Windows Defender IS NOT an anti virus application, nor is it a substitute for one, it is designed to detect and remove spyware, and it's not very good at that. If you must use it, use it in conjunction with a 3rd party application such as Kaspersky, NOD32, AVG, Avira, etc.
That's interesting since when I tried to install AVG it said "you already have an AV program running" and I don't have anything else installed of that nature. ?

It's probably detecting a previous antivirus program that failed to completely remove itself when you uninstalled.
You must have remnants of another AV app on your system, I have yet to see any 3rd partry app (AVG included), that complains about Windows Defender being installed.
You didn't perhaps have Norton or Mcafee installed at some point did you?
The problem with "uninstallers" is that they rarely ever completely uninstall the program they are meant to uninstall. They leave multiple files behind, including the registry entries. You have to boot into safe mode and manually delete the rest of the files associated with it, as well as the registry entries. At least, that's what I always have to do.

Microsoft really needs to study the way various other operating systems do software package management. This isn't a new problem, and it's been solved rather effectively in other environments.

Anyway FWIW it was actually saying "you have another anti-virus or security program installed" - and along with "Defender" I also have Spybot. I installed AVG anyway but apparently it does spyware detection also-? I wonder if AVG might be enough itself?
