So I got the dban onto a disc properly and I'm waiting for the store to open so I can get a working drive and modem.
While I wait I am trying to burn some information to disc and after several tries with used and new CD-r discs I found the disc info said "Disc is open: no"

I just used the dam thing! what happened? I've formatted each disc as I did the one I sucessfully burned to (I didn't change any setting I am aware of), they are all the same brand from the same stack I bought new (hp DVD-R 16X/4.38GB data), there are no open closed options on format. I have Vista Home Premium.
I don't seem to be able to access the formatting and burning program that came with my puter because I don't know what they are named.

I deleted cdburnerP and my D drive is burning files now. You get what you pay for!
I'm still unsure of the controls for this and the message that came up to offer me the option of Live File or to make them permanent and readable by any drive.

I'm thinking it was a settings issue. CD Burner XP is a solid open source burning package. I use it quite a bit. Glad you got it to work though.

I didn't get it to work. I deleted it.
My laptop did the rest on it's own.

Where would the settings be on that? I could find nothing on it that would change the status of the disc or to format it which the FAQ said it could do.
I'm going to get another CD/DVD RW Drive and dialup Modem for the tower I was trying to fix and I'll just have to hook that up to the net to get what I need onto it.
It's a hodgepodge from the recycler and they didn't give me any of the software they set it up with and I didn't make a backup disc when I got it home.

How old is it? Does it have working USB ports? Maybe a thumb drive will work.

Ok, do you think you can keep all this discussion to one thread rather than starting a new one every day? People are going to see this one and have no idea there were 3 or 4 days of prior discussion on the subject.

I thought they were different subjects.
I'm going to buy another OS and load it and then I will just have to learn how to use what I have properly.
Thanks for all the help folks!
