I use AVG Free edition on all my computers. It has always worked well at my house. It has stopped whatever virus has tried to get in.
I've used that for about 4 years, and I had to get away from it. It's just gotten too bloated. I scanned last week and it took over 5 hours to scan 40 gigs of files. Avast did the same thing in a little under 2 hours and found more issues that AVG did.
At an administrative standpoint, I would definitely recommend Avast and even Symantec over AVG. Saves so much valuable time
AVG is not bloated; it does not hog resources on a PC. I have no idea how long it takes to scan since I set it up to scan each PC's hard disk every night, an hour after it gets its update.
I would recommend ESET NOD32, I think it has a free trial version. It's caught several nasties for me. I recommend routinely running Malwarebytes to get rid of the usual spyware you get online. Lastly get the Firefox browser with Adblock and Noscript plugins, these should keep you pretty safe when you are surfing.
I downloaded the free trial to this one and I gotta tell ya, it scanned and said I had no threats, whereas the Avast said I had 24. But, Avast wouldn't remove them without me going further and paying. I may just go try the other Avast link, apparently I did the wrong one, but I did do the one for the home.
Uninstall that version and get the free one. Pick any of the mirror links to download. Wait for the grey download box to appear. The free version is good. It is both an AV and firewall.

I have the AVG and it came up recently that it was expiring, and when I try to update it, it wants $50 or $75. I forget which one. I don't see whats free with it and I didn't know the free part was only for a limited time.
I have used avast for almost 10 years and never had an issue. I am not computer stupid in fact my degree is in computers, so when I clean and fix other computer avast is the first thing I put in. Some it it AVG, while AVG is ok, it has a lot of issues with different systems. As long as you configure Avast correctly you will be ok.

I suspect AVG was configured to scan inside archives while the other was not.

I too recommend NOD32. Avast and AVG failed to prevent antivirus 2009 from wrecking havoc on my computer, so I don't consider them as effective as everyone says. I haven't had any problems since using NOD32.
I use Avira and it works perfectly. I used AVG but I didn't like the version 8.5 so I switched.
