What's the difference? I just got a new laptop b'c my old one went caput. Now I can't install some software because it's saying how I need to install the 64 bit version even though both old and new laptops were Vista. I am peeved.
What programs? Most 32 bit applications will run just fine on Vista64. Device drivers do need to be written for 64 bit though. 64 bit is becoming the standard as 4GB of memory (or more) becomes common. 32 bit operating systems are limited to using typically about 3.3GB of memory.
Basically, 64 bit is twice the processing bandwidth capability so, twice the speed during heavy lifting - its native to Mac OS X but Vista runs different versions and its frankly a mess. It sounds like you had 32Bit Windows and now have 64. If you have a 32 bit version of an app you need to get an updated version for 64 in some cases as not all 32 bit apps work properly on 64bit Windows - its just a mess.
I'm holding off from buying Adobe Web Premium because a call to Adobe and they said it's not for 64 bit... I told them to make 64 bit software version or else I'm not buying. Maybe I should try their trial versions though...

I use Adobe Master Collection on my Windows 7 RC x64 OS just fine. No problems what so ever, there's even a 64 bit Photoshop application to.
As to the OP, avast is free, and it's better than other anti-virus programs. Works fine on x64 systems.
DIE x86, aka 32bit!!!
