My wife has a laptop with Vista installed.
The other day, an auto update came in from Microsoft and it replaced IEX7 with IEX8 ... she couldn't get online after that update ... Norton wouldn't open, Firefox wouldn't open, and many of her other programs wouldn't open either as a result of this Microsoft update.
I fixed her machine by turning off auto updates from Microsoft, and uninstalling IEX8 ... everything works fine now.
Anyone have this experience?
(btw .. I'll be departioning her hard drive in the coming week and installing XP-pro in Vista's place.)

That ain't Vista, but the draconian attitude of Micro$oft, as they have also tried to sneak IE8 crap past me on XP even though I have refused to install it past attempts, and checked the box that they should never bother me about it again.
Micro$oft does not understand the meaning of the word 'no'  |

Leave Vista on her computer and upgrade to Windows 7 in October.
BTW: IE8 works fine with Windows 7. So does the latest versions of Firefox and Opera 10.
As for MS updates, you can select view first before deciding to install. |

I have no problems with IE8...much more stable than IE 7 was, at least on my computer. |

She muist have some setting that allows auto upadtes other than critcal updates. I manually updated to explorer 8 and really like it much better than 7. Probaly like most a user problem really. |

IE8 may download automatically, but it does not install by itself.
I have it installed on several machines and have found a number of things I like about it. That being said, I still use FireFox most of the time.
I have also uninstalled it from a few machines at work due to some obscure compatibility problems that will probably be solved soon, and probably should have been dealt with by the application developers before IE8 was released to the general public.

just leave vista, 7 will be out in roughly 2 months, the process from vista to 7 will be smooth while xp to 7 might not be.. anyway who wants to backtrack 2 OS'S?
