I know there are many knowledgeable IT people on here.

I cannot consult my normal IT people, so I figured I'd take a stab at it here.

I have road runner and a wireless card in my laptop, however, it disconnects from the network alot. Like 10 times in a couple hours the other day.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what is causing this?

XNY

Thanks to anyone who responds.

Could be a powersaving option on your Wireless NIC. Or if you using Linksys anything they are prone to this. Some firmware updates could possibly fix it.

Look at your modem type. does it happen to be a linksys wcg200, cable modem with wireless? I had linksys replace mine with the latest version and the problem went away but before that it was awful.

Linksys is definitely prone to that happening. Is your wireless card older? If so, you may need to buy a new one.

Thanks for the quick response.

The notebook came with the network card installed, however, it's 9 months old which probably makes it obsolete already.

I do have a linksys router and road runner broadband for internet service.

Right click on the wireless networks near your home and see what channel they are using. Move to a different channel, away from the others. Also did you try it without WPA security, first?

Then try it with WPA security.

.....

Disable SSID broadcast? Besides the usual firmware and driver updates I find the drops to be quite common when...

a) SSID broadcast is disabled.
b) The owner has 2.4GHz cordless phones (or their neighbor!)
c) They are a P2P user.
d) They have a pirated OS.
e) There is malware damage. Hint? Try WINSOCKFIX after the spwyare/malware is dealt with.

I would look into your router then. The wirless card built in should be ok for the most part. Google your router model number with the words disconect and see what comes back.

is the wireless built in or is their a card hanging out the side of the laptop?

Did the problem just start happening? Has it just started with road runner?

Do you have a wired connection to the router?

If so does it also drop? If it does then the problem isn't the wireless card.
