Avast vs. AVG?
Which is the superior free anti-virus program. Avast free home edition of free AVG? I am currently using Avast but see many people here highly recommend AVG.

I use AVG, but different people like different products. "Superior" can mean different things to different people.
AVG is good because it is very user friendly, and on the systems I support I can just load it, set it up, and tell them not to touch it and it just works.

I prefer AVG because I can carry a copy around on a flash drive, install it and use it more easily than other products I have tried.

I used AVG for a couple of years, but on the Windows 7 system I've been using for the past few months, I've been trying the new free Microsoft Security Essentials program, which seems to work quite well and unobtrusively.

AVG for me so far, but it was on anothers recommendation.
They also recommended getting (and having handy):
Peer Guardian
Malware Bytes
Combofix (only last resort).
I thik Trend Micro has an online scanner as well, and there are a few spybot defenders out there (I can't remember the exact names).
They are all handy to have, key is to only run one for each genre at a time or you will be putting a major drag on your computer.... (too many things running...)

I was using Sophos, which is quite good, but only available for corporate clients. I decided to switch to a free one a couple of years after I left the company. 
I was using AVG for a while, and decided to give Avast a try. I don't like Avast's license mechanism, but I like the actual product much more. I still have AVG on one or two boxes, but the rest have Avast. |

I've read a few reviews that pitted Avast against AVG, but also included a third one, Avira Antivir. Avast and Avira seemed to both beat AVG, and were pretty comparable to each other. I went with Avira because apparently it runs less processes.

Avast Paid on my home machine.
Avira Free on my office machine.
I guess they both work.

Used AVG, both free and paid for my larger/business clients, for years but switched to Avast a couple years ago when I had trouble with AVG, mostly the managed implementation. Since I have had few problems and am overall much happier.
