Default Does anyone know if there's a hotfix to fix this problem?

Sometimes, Vista will not recognize USB devices that are plugged into the system. I know it's just the operating system being a *bleeeeep* since it happens with my USB flash drives, and a reboot fixes it. Not so with my printer. I've scoured the help articles in Help and Support, as well as online at Microsofts website, but nothing seems to be working.

With the printer plugged in, look in device manager to see if it's listed as what it is, or if it's listed as other or unknown device, or not at all.

Many printers will not work without a proper driver installed on the system. Several different HP printers I have used refused to work without the driver installed BEFORE being plugged in.

It is possible that the BIOS on this system might need an update. The USB controller on the motherboard may be a bit flaky and Vista may not always receive the proper notification required to activate the device.

You could also run Windows Update with the Custom option instead of Express to see if there is an updated driver for the system.

When I upgraded from XP to Vista, I could no longer use my HP printer and they were not going to update the drivers for it. So bought a new HP printer. This time HP updated the drivers for Windows 7 right away.

That is likely because thay had to make very few if any changes to the driver to get it to work with 7, most Vista drivers work fine in 7.
