Also, this particular printer did not allow any printing unless all cartridges were full.
When I had a Cannon MP460, I would do:

Print-->on the print menu look for where it says Copies & Pages and click on the button. When the menu drops down, select Quality & Media and then check the Greyscale box in the options menu.

Note that greyscale is not true black & white, as you will still utilize some of the color ink cartridge.
