"Over the past year, a number of you have been telling us that, due to "pre-optimization" of computers, it's difficult -- sometimes impossible -- to walk into a Best Buy and leave with the advertised deal (in effect, you would be paying a $39.99 surcharge over the computer's advertised price). We decided to look into your complaints. We sent the Consumer Reports secret shoppers to 18 different Best Buys in 11 states, and one of our shoppers was denied the price advertised for a specific model because only pre-optimized computers were available. When the Consumer Reports engineers compared three "optimized" computers to ones with default factory settings, there was no performance improvement. In one case, an optimized laptop actually performed 32% worse than the factory model."
Maybe I should start offering computer fumigation to prevent insect and spyware infestation. I can get some canned air with custom labeling, spray the insides of a PC for 10 seconds, wrap it in plastic (telling them to remove it after 12 hours), and collect $79.95.
The sad thing is when I have a computer in my shop, I do an actual clean up and tune up as a matter of course for free, takes 5 minutes or so if you know what your doing.

Interesting ...
A few months ago we purchased a laptop from them (one of those *only a few available*).
The price was listed on the advertisement, so we expected to see *just that price, plus local tax*.
When we were ready to pay, we noted the additional charge of the *nonsense optimising*.
We refused to pay that charge and they took it off after some pressure selling, which I did not fall for.
I most have said *NO* for twenty times .....
How many *fall* for that nonsense ????

Buyer beware !!!
They're as bad as car dealers where you get into the finance guy's office and get the hard sell on the paint protection and scotch guarding and whatever other crap they added onto the bill of sale hoping you don't notice.
