I am a fairly experienced computer user. Recently my iMac G4 died, three of my Windows PC's died, and my two Windows laptops died (I know a disaster right?). I am down to using a Toshiba netbook for everything and I am really straining it.
I am interested in purchasing an Apple laptop that will act as a desktop. I am a heavy internet user and do a lot of video and music downloading, which has made my Windows PC's act funny. I am avid user of Google Street View, which occaisionally caused Internet explorer to close on my older Windows PCs. I travel frequently and many times on long haul flights (some without power access) where I'll need strong battery life. I am an avid photographer and like the mac photo editing programs. I also will be using this computer for storing music files.
Looking for long battery life, large screen, usability, reasonable storage, and strong and quick performance.
If you are editing photos and especially videos, then go with the MacBook Pro. I also recommend upgrading to the largest hard drive for storing all your media, just make sure to buy an external hard drive to back everything up with Time machine.
What others said. I'd also spend the extra $80 ($100 w/ support) for VMWare Fusion and throw Windows on there as well - or at least test drive it for 30 days. Just make sure you have enough memory to support it. If you need to continue to use the apps/data on that Toshiba, you can actually use VMWare and virtualize that system and put it on your new Mac (Physical to Virtual or P2V).
I've bought 5 Refurbs for my family and not one of them has caused a problem or looked used in any manner. One point, if you see a computer that you like.....buy it now....since it might not be there next time you visit!!
Price isn't really an issue, but I am not keen on paying $4,500 for a laptop. I'd prefer to less than $3,500 if possible.
I would like to get the 17-inch if possible, but I don't want it to be unmanageable, so I will have to take a hard look at it.
I think the standard 500GB hard disk should be large enough. I don't have intentions to run Windows on it (I did in the past, when I was working for an organization that required Windows for work). I still have this Netbook that has Windows.
How much RAM should I have for adequate speed? Is the upgraded processor on the 17inch worth the $300?
Plus you can upgrade RAM cheaper yourself. Don't "upgrade" from Apple. You'll save a couple of hundred bucks.
Do you happen to know how many RAM slots there are inside of the MacBook Prop 17"? If there are only two I'd have to take out the two sticks already installed and replace them with larger.

In the current 'unbody' MacBook Pro, 4GB = 2 slots x 2GB S-DIMMS.
Unfortunately you'll have to replace what it ships with unless you custom order from store.apple.com
