I'm no longer an OS expert (I did stints in the mid to late '80s as a kernel developer in the HP-UX kernel lab at HP and in the IBM Advanced Workstations Division operating system group) but I'm not familiar with anything in the Linux kernel that would cause a clean reboot like that. Kernel panic is more likely.
