Still trying to make up my mind....

Go for portability and long battery life
HP EliteBook 2740p Tablet PC (ENERGY STAR) (WH306UT) specifications - HP Small & Medium Business products

Or sacrifice some portability and battery life for a little more performance
HP EliteBook 8440w Mobile Workstation (ENERGY STAR) (FN093UT) specifications - HP Small & Medium Business products

I own a Toshiba Satellite A205 and it has been excellent. It runs quiet, stays pretty cool, and has some good components factory-installed. With that being said, I'd definitely consider Toshiba. They have a lot of good products out right now.

I like my Gateway, nothing like a 18" screen with a fast dedicated video card for under $1k. There are some good deals also with Dell refurb when combined with discounts, but you gotta keep checking for availability. Remember, laptops are not for your laps!

I got a 17" HP dv9930. It was a desktop replacement, but next time around, I'm definitely going to get something a little smaller and more portable.

If you are not a geek or amateur computer engineer, here's what I'm doing: I bought a good Dell two years ago with the top-line service contract, about $1600 total. They guarantee to keep it running--they sent out a tech guy to replace a crashed hard drive, will spend all the time it takes to track down any bug or glitch. My time is money, so this beats the heck out of spending $500 or $600 every year for a cheapie. $1600 over 3 years is the same money as buying a cheapie every year. Of course, if you are a rocket scientist, you don't need to do this.

I'd wondered about Toshiba, and they seem to have some good prices too. Anyone else have an opinion on them?

They're kind of on the low end when it comes to lappies, except for their toughbooks.

Toshiba does not make fast or powerful notebooks in my opinion, but I agree on their durability. They can take a beating.

Good. I'm looking for a laptop for surfing mostly that I don't have to worry about banging up. Not that I'm rough on a machine, but things can happen.

When I priced stuff recently this guy tried to convince me to buy their protection plan and all these extras. Claimed even light use and some part would be burned out. Maybe he sells used cars in his second job?
