Hello Everyone,

Are there any towns or areas in Danbury that are walkable to both schools and shopping? Even if the shopping is just Walmart and a Stop n Shop?

In Danbury, anywhere walkable is pretty undesireable. Especially near Walmart and Stop and Shop. The best bet may be on Padanaram Rd by SuperFoodmart - There are some condos and homes there both walkable to the supermarket and on the routes for public transportation, that aren't too bad.

Bethel and Ridgefield have small downtown areas that might be walkable. New Milford too. Otherwise the Danbury area is pretty car oriented. Jay

The Deer Hill area is walkable in Danbury. So is Greenwood Ave in Bethel

Bethel is pretty walkable. There's Caraluzzi's grocery store on Greenwood Ave as well as other shops and restaurants. I believe the schools are close by as well.

The downtown center of Danbury is rather beautiful and quite walkable. After all, right on White St. the kids walk to everything from the Wesconn campus. Personal safety would only be a concearn in very small localized areas (former factory's shut down almost 30 years) so you get areas for homlessness and prostitution etc...Overall I give the town a big Sidewalks galore to schools, stores etc..

I agree with Bethel and New Milford as well. More familiar with New Milford, but NM is definitely far more rural in character than Danbury and all the schools "downtown" accessable via sidewalk have been converted to local govt. bldgs. If you lived downtown New Milford, you could walk to great restaurants like 59 Bank and Theo & Gretchens, the Bank St. Theatre, great hair salons like En-Vogue, shop at CVS or Big Y via sidwalk as well!

I live in Danbury, and hate it actually. My husband and I want to move asap. We love to walk everywhere, and, unless you want to live in a less than desirable area in Danbury (anywhere near the downtown...) you need a car for everything.

I agree with PP. Definitely look at Newtown and Bethel. Much nicer towns, and more walkability.

I am not sure why you would say Newtown is more walkable. It is a pretty rural town with few sidewalks that I know of. There is no real downtown area either, mostly shopping centers. Still though it is a veyr nice town. Bethel is very nice too and is more walkable. Jay

I agree. Newtown is anti-walkable by any measure you'd use. But Newtown is NOT RURAL. It's a bedroom suburb with a lot of trees.

Bethel is maybe your best bet.

When I say rural, I am talking about rural in the Connecticut suburb standard meaning homes on larger lots. Most of Newtown is zoned for acre or more lots so it gives it a more rural feel. Jay
