What is the cheapest way to travel from JFK to Westport at 6pm on a weekday? We are relocating and need to rent a car for a few weeks, but don't want to at JFK because it is insanely expensive. We looked into renting one at the airport and dropping it in CT, but that was equally expensive.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Default maybe

you could take a cab to New Rochelle(probably just under a 20 mile ride) or one of the other Westchester New Haven line Metro North stations from JFK, consult the New Haven/Metro North schedule to see what goes to Westport from which station

or take the Airtrain from JFK and connect up with Grand Central terminal (you'd have to consult the NY City transit map). you could take the Airtrain to Howard Beach station and pick up the A train to Broadway-Nassau station and transfer to the 4/5 uptown to 42 street/Grand Central

I don't know what specifically runs where other than this tho

I've never used them, but these people run frequent shuttle vans out of JFK to CT.:GO AIRPORT SHUTTLE - Share Ride Airport Shuttle Service | Airport Limousine Car Service | GO Airport Shuttle

The cheapest way is as follows:

JFK Airtrain to Jamaica Station ($5).
Subway from Jamaica to Grand Central- Take the E Transfer to the 6 ($2.25)
Take MetroNorth to Westport ($13-16) depending on time of day

Costs are per person.

I would never actually do this. It's a royal pain in the rear, takes forever and isn't totally practical with luggage.

If you are relocating to Westport, frankly, the trip from JFK is the least of your expense worries.

Rent a car at JFK... It won't be THAT much more expensive than renting locally in CT. I used to do it all the time before I moved back up here.

As much of a hassle that the train is, wouldn't driving from JFK to Westport at 6pm take even longer??

Take the $15 bus shuttle to Grand Central and then train it. It's cheaper to take the Airtrain and subway, but easier to take the shuttle.

I agree with Silli. This service is called "Airport Express" and will drop you off right across the street from the entrance to Grand Central.

Bus and then train still takes about 3 hours from JFK to Westport! All together it is a royal pain to get to the airport or out to CT unless you pay for a cab or have the time to spare... Red Dot Airport Shuttle leaves from the Westport Inn which is pretty good for $64. It is triple the cost of train/bus but perhaps worth it (I have not tried).
