Hi ,

I am looking for some help, I am trying to find out where in CT is the best place to live with in commuting distance of NYC Manhattan ideally into Grand central.

I was looking at Bridgeport but after reading a number of articles am starting to think that it may not be the best / safest place to live.

We (my Husband Dog and Me) are currently Renting in NJ and as newly weds are looking to buy our first home and start a family so really don't want to get this wrong.

Any help would be much appreciated. We are both new to the tri state are.

Thank you in advance

Will you be renting in CT as well? What is the maximum commute you'd be willing to do and how much can you afford to spend per month on housing?

Weller,

In your price range, you can find a nice 3 bedroom raised ranch up on about 1/2 acre built in the middle 1960s to late 1970s or almost new 2-3 bedroom luxury towhome in the Danbury area.

Danbury or maybe Stratford/Milford if you want to be near the water.

Weller-Wareham,
Danbury requires a transfer in Stamford and most in Ct would consider it too far to commute on a daily basis. You can check out the metro north website to see various train schedules. I would recommend staying on a direct train line if you can. Are you willing to buy a smaller house than needs some cosmetics in exchange for a nice town with good schools? Fairfield is a bit of a trek from NYC, but it is a charming town with great schools and starter houses within your budget. It's about a 70 min train ride into Grand Central.
Also check out raveis.com for listings. They seem to be pretty up to date and can give you an idea of what's available in your price range.

A home in Fairfield for that price would be modest but still pretty nice. It is a nice town but you would get more for your money in Trumbull, Stratford or Milford.

Also note that many people in the Danbury area commute into Manhattan on the Harlem Line of Metro North. They would either go over to Southeast Station or Brewster station for their trains. Much easier than commuting on the Danbury line. Jay

You're willing to commute 1.5 hrs each way? That means 15 hours a week will be spent commuting (assuming a 5-day work week)!

Anyway, I would probably forget about working in NYC altogether. If you want to live in CT, I would suggest finding a new job in the Stamford area. Many of the same jobs actually pay higher in Stamford than in NYC. I know this from having been in public accounting when I worked at Deloitte. And you could save yourself about 10 hours of commuting each week. These days, time = money.
