People have to give you reputation points for you to get them.
If someone agrees with your comment or appreciates your input then they will give you a rep point. Which is done by clicking on the picture of the scale on the right hand side of someones post.

You can also click the [+] Rate this post positively which is another way to "rep" someone. I just repped your post to get you started

The scales link on the upper right side of the post, though, allow the repper to add a comment while giving you rep points. The + at the bottom left just gives you the rep point without a comment.

How does the 'limit'/spread rep around thing work?

I understand the intent but it seems pretty limiting too. It forces users to rep stuff with less discretion so they can get more reps for folks they see/agree with frequently.

There are a few threads about it here: http://www.city-data.com/forum/searc...rchid=22624292

But it goes something like this: You can give out 35 reps per day and you have to give out at least 25 before you can rep the same person again. I *think* that's how it goes, but you can read through the above threads to make certain.

I do this! I try to hand out reps daily...and I love to leave rep comments in posters that I like. For me, that's the fun of CD. Otherwise, I don't think I would post nearly as much or at all.

Seriously, you are worried about reputation on an internet forum?....It really means nothing....trust me!

In some of the forums here people rep a lot more than others. For instance, I think it was the general Chit-chat forum I posted in a few times, where I was astounded at how many reps I got in a matter of hours. Posters are very friendly there, unlike some of the other forums on CD.
