I am moving from Philadelphia(city line ave) to Bridgeport ct for work. I saw a co-op at 59 rennell st literally next to University of Bridgeport campus. The co-op is only 10k + 403/month for hotwater, heat and taxes. What do you think of that street?

What is your opinion on New Haven vs Bridgeport? Which has higher crime? I am being told New haven is worst.

thanks for your help.

New Haven's crime rate is generally considered to be higher than Bridgeport but honestly neither is good. Rennell Street is not the worst in Bridgeport but it is still not good IMHO. That is why the place is so cheap. It is a shame since the South End can be very nice. Seaside Park is nearby and it is stunning. Downtown is not far and the University of Bridgeport has some great things to offer. The problem is that just up the street from this address is a problem public housing project that breeds crime. If you are interested in Bridgeport you might be better off checking into places downtown, Black Rock or the North End. Jay

Despite the school being there, that's a pretty dumpy area. I wouldn't personally live there.

If you look at the crime statistics for Bridgeport and New Haven, they're almost identical. Each has their up and down years and trends, but they're both consistently higher in crime. I wouldn't say one is "better" than the other.

That said - as a city, New Haven offers a lot more than Bridgeport. Arts, restaurants, museums, nightlife, music, etc.

Are you dead set on living in a city? There's lots of other good options near Bridgeport, like Stratford and Milford. Then you have the commute and live in a nice area, but are near other cities to enjoy what they offer.

Also, 10k? Typo?

Probably not. It is a co-op which are much cheaper than condos. The difference is that a co-op you own a portion of the entire building which entitles you to live in a particular unit there. In a condo you own the actual unit independently. It can be more difficult to get a loan on a co-op since the loan is not held against a property directly. In that area home prices are low so a co-op would have to be pretty cheap to have any chance of being bought. Jay

Co-ops are a lot more common in Westchester County and NYC so I'm familiar with them (in fact I live in one and my mom is a real estate agent specializing in coops) and even in "crappy" areas, the cheapest I ever remember them were about $25-50K during the mid 1990s. During the "real estate boom" of the 2000s, you never saw even a small studio in a "ghetto" area for much under $100K. Nowadays I do see some in "marginal" Westchester cities like Yonkers and Mt. Vernon as low as $60-70K, so even weighting for what I think is cheaper housing in Bridgeport I would find $10K quite hard to believe. I didn't even think coops existed in CT outside of Stamford (they're not common in the NJ portion of the NY area either and outside of NY you mostly only see them in Chicago, DC, and Miami, and in far less proportion than here, everywhere else is pretty much condos and rentals only).

Granted I don't think he/she meant "$100K" either though.....

I did mean 10k or 10,000. Here is the link

59 Rennell St Unit: 33 Bridgeport CT - Home For Sale and Real Estate Listing - MLS #98498930 - Realtor.com®

There are actually 2 of them at that price in the building. The reason I believe its so cheap is because
1. bad area
2. strict co op rules(they interview you)
3. you cant rent it out(owner occupied only)
4. no elevator

coop fees include heat, hot water, maint, and taxes. It seems like a good deal and I love the beach. Im used to living on a college campus so I am seriously considering it. Is University of Bridgeport expanding?

How is the mill hill area? I am told that area is better. There is a co op for 22k around granfield ave.

You really need to visit in person to find what you are comfortable with. Seaside is beautiful, then UB has a decent block maybe and it gets much worse fast until you get to downtown which is coming along with rentals and restaurants (plus the train is right there)

It depends on what you are comfortable with. This website is super conservative in terms of where to live. I dont mean conservative in the political sense, for example, someone called Milford "Scary" the other day.

It isn't spectacular, but it isn't "violent"(shootings/stabbings). It's mostly working class poor. You could do much, much worse.
